Bus Ethics Spring Break project

Business Ethics- Final project

Policy Manual

For this part of the course you and your partners will be asked to start to put your policy manual together.

What can it look like?  I do not hold you to the below, it is a decent framework.  Feel free to research, just don’t plagiarize and don’t use pre-made templates.

For the Policy Document

The first thing you will find in your policy manual template is your headline banner. It's the one written on top of the page and in bold letters. It contains your company name, the policy title, issuing date, policy number, and effective date of implementation.

Next is the purpose of the policy or otherwise known as the policy statement. This is concise statement that summarizes the important points into one paragraph.

Then you have the detailed policy statement, which includes the effective date and the discussion of the specifics of the policy.

Applicability is the next part of your policy manual template. This states who the policy is intended to, and the consequences if one fails to comply with the policy.

This is followed by definition of terms, if necessary. And then the Cognizant Office, which contains the specific individual who should be contacted if any problems occur concerning the policy.

After this, you have the Policy Authority, which contains the administrative group who reviews the policy.

Next to this would be references, and then lastly, the implementation procedures that state how the policy should be carried out.

For the Procedures Document

For this, you have the headline banner again, which have the same contents as the policy manual template.

After this, you have the overview or the procedure description that describes the objectives or tasks that the procedure aims to accomplish. It also states under which circumstances the procedure should be used.

Areas of responsibility soon follow, where departments, units, offices and individual titles are stated. These are the people who need to follow the procedure, and the specific details of their responsibilities are also discussed.

Next would be the references, and then lastly, the help page. Help page is a table that contains training programs, phone numbers and sources of institutions that can help carry out the procedures.

  • Creativity is important but the most important part of this particular manual is that it reads like a policy manual geared towards an Ethics course.  Make sure I can “hear and feel” your given methodology.  Make sure it is well equipped to deal with any crisis that may come along. The next stage of the course will refine the product while testing it by fire.

Your first iteration is due March 20th when we return from Spring Break.

You have this Friday to work freely on it. I suggest taking the time together as you all know you can meet at this time.

Print a copy for me, one for each member of your business, and one extra copy.

Remember you will be critiqued by your partners so distribute the work evenly.

I will post links to examples on the blog.

Make it look professional, design will not carry the day, but it can’t hurt.

Eventually ask me for my favorite “hand in a paper” story from Seminary. (sensitive ears can be excused)

Don’t plagiarize.

I will show these to my colleagues, don’t embarrass me.

Think strategically and tactically for these documents as I am going to throw a crisis or two at your business and this document is your only way out.  Yes, if you can’t solve it with this document, your business may fold.
